This report is an executive summary for the gambling harms inequalities framework, which aims to collate and synthesise information, predominantly from GambleAware funded research, on inequalities in gambling harm to understand the underlying causes or specific drivers of gambling harms. Importantly, this framework demonstrates how different factors intersect to show the numerous and broader impacts of gambling harm.

Key findings

This framework identifies the main determinants that increase the risk and prevalence of gambling harm and gambling harm inequalities.
One determinant is broader social inequality, such as deprivation.
Another determinant are the drivers of harm that are evidence based, such as experiences of discrimination or loneliness.
Another determinant are the barriers to treatment and support to reduce gambling harm, such as lack of tailored support for specific needs (e.g., for neurodivergent individuals).
These determinants intersect with each other; this makes the unequal distribution of gambling harm complex and requires a holistic approach.
