Exploring problem gambling, loneliness and lifetime suicidal behaviours: a cross-sectional study using the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007

Author: A. John, S.C. Lee, H. Wardle, S. McManus & S. Dymond Published: June 2019

Summary

This report, commissioned by GambleAware, analyses data from the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey to explore associations between problem gambling, loneliness, and lifetime suicidal behaviours in England.

Topics covered

  • prevalence of gambling, loneliness, and suicidal behaviours
  • associations between problem gambling and suicidal behaviours
  • role of loneliness in the relationship between gambling and suicidal behaviours

Key findings

Problem gambling was associated with higher rates of lifetime suicidal thoughts and attempts and perceived loneliness was consistently associated with suicidal behaviours.
The association between problem gambling and suicide attempts persisted independent of loneliness, suggesting addressing loneliness alone may not fully mitigate suicide risk in problem gamblers.
