Understanding trends between online gambling content, and gambling attitudes and behaviours among children and young people

Author: Social Finance, in collaboration with Bournemouth University, YGam, GamCare, & University of Sussex Published: September 2025

Summary

This report summarises the insights and findings from a survey into children and young people’s (CYP’s) engagement with gambling-related influencer content.

Topics covered

  • Children and young people (CYP) attitudes towards exposure to gambling influencer content
  • Impact of influencer-driven gambling advertising and marketing on behaviours
  • Regulatory and policy implications

Key findings

  • Exposure to gambling content amongst CYP is high, with 87% of surveyed young people reporting they had seen gambling content online and 16% recalling gambling promotions from content creators
  • There is a clear link between time spent playing video or online games and exposure to gambling-related content, suggesting these platforms are key points of contact.
  • CYP following gambling influencers were more likely to see gambling as “harmless fun”, to use promotional codes from influencers to gamble, and to engage in high-risk activities (e.g., crypto trading)
  • Many CYP surveyed feel they have little to no control over the gambling content they encounter, with more than half reporting that the amount of gambling content they see feels out of their control.
  • Within the survey marked gender differences were found: males were significantly more likely than females to engage in both regulated and unregulated gambling activities, including being 6x more likely to trade crypto, 3x more likely to participate in esports betting, and 8x more likely to play fantasy sports.
  • Overall, CYP want to be less exposed to gambling content online, but current protections are insufficient, suggesting the need for stronger regulatory action.
